March meeting - First meeting!

Action!

How and why I paint

Richard Dobson shared his painting process, where sometimes applying paint leads to what the image becomes, rather than the initial conception. He talked about communicating mood and emotions and the value of image-making. Influences include Hockney, Rothko, Philip Guston, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt.

Making a collage

Morris Gallagher shared a series of collages about health and social care (see left). Together we produced a collage, in 30 minutes around the theme of ‘Anger.’ This was a powerful exercise where we explored our feelings about unexpressed anger. The finished collage is shown below.

The future

  • We want the group to grow – let us know if you want to participate. Ring Morris on 07917116183.
  • Some of us will continue to create work based on themes discussed during the meeting; ‘Anger,’ ‘Disruption,’ and ‘Connection.’ Or explore new ideas.
  • We have a padlet to support that growth and collaboration – let me know if you want an email invite to this. You can observe this activity or be a participant.

Next meeting

  •  The next meeting will be in May or June 2024 – we will let you know ASAP.
  • We will be working with clay at Richard’s studio near Burnopfield. The number of people at this meeting will need to be capped at 12.
  •  You don’t need to have any experience of ‘clay building’ or even have watched an episode of ‘The Great Pottery Throwdown.’
