Join ‘Movies@Hope’ 2024 at Hope Community Church in Low Fell.

Next Movies@Hope

The next Movies@Hope is on Saturday 19th October, from 7-7.30 pm for a one-hour discussion proceeded by food, when will be discussing the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’ It’s a complex ‘whodunit’ courtroom drama.

What is Movies@Hope?

It’s like a book club but instead of reading a book ahead of time and discussing it later, we do the same after watching a film. We meet every 2-3 months in someone’s home to have a meal and discuss movies. This is our third year of meeting. Last year we talked about ‘Triangle of Sadness’, ‘The Father,’ ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ ‘Home Alone,’ and ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

How does it work?

A group of 8-14 people, sometimes more, are led by people from Hope Community Church. We discuss films that say something about life and the world that we live in. For example, at our very first meeting in 2022 we discussed Kenneth Branagh’s memory of his childhood in ‘Belfast,’ but you might prefer a coming of age movie like ‘Ladybird,’ a ‘rom-com’ like ‘Notting Hill’ or ‘When Harry met Sally,’ “Barbie’ or ‘The Godfather Part 2’ is more your thing. You will have ideas about what films we could view and talk about.

Normally we will watch an agreed film before the meeting; most people will do this in their homes. You may not subscribe to the media platform where the film can be seen, e.g. Netflix or Amazon Prime. To remove these costs and obstacles, particularly when we are looking at recent movies, we will create at least three opportunities to see the film for free ahead of the club meeting. This will usually be at the home of one of the leaders.

Previous Movies and dates in 2024.

  • Saturday 9th March, ‘The Creator’
  • Saturday 18th May, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’
  • Saturday 19th September, ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’
  • Saturday, November 30th, ‘Family Movies’ – TBD

Group members communicate on a WhatsApp Group – ask if you want to be added to this group.

NOTE: Some of the movies that we discuss deal with adult subjects. We will highlight these ahead of the meeting but it is up to parents to research and decide whether a movie and its discussion is appropriate for their child. Each year we will have at least one meeting that is suitable for children, young people, or both, normally this will be the Christmas meeting.
