Normally food from 7 pm and discussion from 7.30-8.30 pm.

The ‘Christmas’ meeting is on Sat 26th Nov when we start a little earlier at 6.45 pm, when there will be mince pies and drinks before the meeting; children are welcome for that part of the evening.

  • Saturday 25th June: ‘Belfast’ (2022)
  • Saturday 24th September ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ (2016)
  • Saturday 26th November ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (1946), which is the main movie, and ‘Elf’ (2003)

What is it?

It’s like a ‘book club’ but instead of reading a book ahead of time and then discussing it later, we do the same after watching a film. The group will meet every 2-3 months in someone’s home to have a meal and talk about movies. In the last year, several of us have enjoyed meeting online with a group of like-minded people from the UK and abroad to discuss movies. We have enjoyed this so much that we want to do the same here in Low Fell.

How does it work?

A group of 10-14 people, maybe more, will be led by people from Hope Community Church. We will discuss films that say something about life and the world that we live in. For example, at our first meeting we discussed Kenneth Branagh’s memory of his childhood in ‘Belfast,’ but you might prefer a coming of age movie like ‘Ladybird,’ a ‘rom-com’ like ‘Notting Hill’ or ‘When Harry met Sally,’ or maybe ‘The Godfather Part 2’ or ‘Gladiator’ is more your thing. You will have ideas about what films we could view and talk about.

Normally we will watch an agreed film before the meeting; most people will do this in their own homes. Most of the movies will be free to view, but for recent films, there may be a small cost involved if it is pay-per view. You may also not subscribe to the media platform where the film can be seen, e.g. Netflix. To remove these cost and media obstacles, we will create at least two opportunities to see the film for free ahead of the club meeting. This will usually be at the home of one of the leaders.

CONTACT Morris and Janet from our contacts page if you want to view them ahead of time.

The group communicates on a WhatsApp Group – ask if you want to be added to this group.

How can I join?

You don’t need to be a member of Hope Community Church to join this group. For more information, contact Morris, Janet or Elly by sending a message on our contacts page.
